Abstract

The Praxis 9/13 on “Left-Wing Populism” opened with the provocative question of whether Bernie Sanders is a left-wing populista. The discussion began with an excerpt from the opening pages of Bernie Sanders' book, Guide to Political Revolution:
"The American people understand that healthcare is a right for everyone and not a privilege, and that in a competitive global economy we must make public universities and colleges tuition-free. The American people know that in the midst of massive wealth and income inequality, the very wealthy must begin to pay their fair share of taxes… This is not Bernie Sanders talking. This is what poll after poll shows the American people want" (Sanders 2017: x-xi).
Sanders boasts, there, of having confronted the entire 'establishment' and makes a deep emotional appeal to his audience to join a revolutionary moment (2017: ix). "This is our country. Help us take it back. Join the political revolution" (2017: xii).
At the close of the rich Praxis 9/13 debate, the final commentator returned to the still unanswered question, "Is Bernie Sanders a populist?" — to which Jan-Werner Müller responded: "Obviously not!"
