Abstract

In her new book For a Left Populism (2018), Chantal Mouffe advocates for an egalitarian, open, and comprehensive populist political strategy that could serve to unite all people who have been marginalized by the global neoliberal hegemony over the last forty years. As a discursive and rhetorical device, Mouffe argues, left populism could construct an all-encompassing "we, the people" around the unmet demands of all those left behind, standing in opposition to the dominant powers. Mouffe identifies elements of this left-populist project in the political discourse of Bernie Sanders and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and in the approach of the Podemos and Syriza parties.
